A boiler's metal tube will rise in temperature more quickly than the water inside it. Metal's free electrons vibrate quickly with heat, and temperature measures this internal kinetic energy. Water has no such free particles, and hydrogen bonds hold its molecules together, restricting movement. Assuming that heat enters the boiler's tube and water at the same rate during the initial heating stage, you can calculate the tube's final temperature from the temperature rise of the water.
 A surveyor who measures a plot of land shaped like a quadrilateral has to record the sizes of eight separate angles. These angles exist between the quadrilateral's sides and its diagonals. In theory, these angles should obey the mathematical rules that apply to all Euclidean, two-dimensional quadrilaterals. In practice, changes in elevation and measurement errors may create recorded angles that can't form an actual polygon. The quadrilateral approximate adjustment method alters the angles to create a mathematically consistent figure.
The term elastomers describes a class of products that stretches, and remains pliable after they cure. Silicone caulk used around a bathtub is a common elastomer. When these products are designed, chemical engineers use a number of stress tests in order to determine if the final product is suited for a particular application.
